House with Heart Icon

Milele

Welcome to

the Milele Home,

a haven of hope for Kenya’s most vulnerable children

and young mums.

Hope grows here

Nestled amid lush greenery on Lake Victoria's scenic shores, the Milele Home offers a sanctuary for Kisumu’s most vulnerable mothers and babies. Our residence is more than just a place to live - it's a place where mothers and children can find hope, healing, and a new beginning.

Every mum and child

deserves support

The child welfare crisis in Kenya is a heartbreaking reality.

Teen mothers, victims of sexual violence, and those living in poverty with HIV/AIDS are struggling to care for their newborns. With limited options,

many of these young mothers resort to abandoning their babies in the hopes

of providing them with a chance at survival. Unfortunately, the few government welfare agencies are unable to accommodate the ever-growing need, leaving these mothers in a state of distress and despair.

Our team recognized the need for a safe and nurturing environment where these mothers can learn invaluable life skills, receive an education, and bond with their babies. Our program exists to empower and support these young women, providing them with the resources and guidance they need to become confident and independent mothers who can provide for themselves and their children.

their mothers attend school or take

care of other responsibilities.

to build a better future for our families.

Our residency,

a place to call home.

Hope and love abound at Milele. As soon as you step inside the home, you’re greeted by bright and cheerful colours that reflect the joy and happiness of motherhood. In the garden, children play on jungle gyms while friendly cows graze nearby.

With the support of our sponsors, we take great care to make Milele as inviting as possible. Our cribs are handcrafted with love, ensuring that each baby has a comfortable and secure place to rest their head. The atmosphere is one of support and understanding, where mothers can share their experiences and offer each other encouragement.

Compassionate care for mums and babies

Our home has the capacity to host up to eight moms and their babies, and we are committed to providing each family with the support they need to succeed. Our compassionate caregivers are always on hand to offer guidance and advice, ensuring that every mother and baby receives individual care and attention.

We also offer a range of activities and learning experiences that promote physical, emotional, and cognitive development. From creative play to educational games, we ensure that every child in our care is engaged, happy, and thriving.

Growing minds and hearts at our daycare

Our daycare program is designed to support young mothers as they navigate the challenges of early parenthood, while also providing a nurturing space for their little ones to grow.

We provide a range of activities and resources to promote

healthy development, including age-appropriate toys, books,

and educational games. The mothers are always welcome to join us at the daycare where they can connect with one another, share their experiences, and build a supportive community.

At Milele, we understand the importance of education

for young mothers. That's why we offer a unique program that provides safe and nurturing care for their little ones while they attend school during the day. Being a mother can be a full-time job, and we want to make sure that our young mothers have the support they need to continue their education and achieve their dreams.

Shunned and shamed

Kenya’s young mothers are forced to fend for themselves.

Shockingly, over 28,000 babies are born to young mothers aged between 10 and 15 every year in Kenya, and many of them are left to fend for themselves. In some communities, the traditional expectation is that young women should get married before having children.

When a teenage girl or young woman becomes pregnant before marriage, she is said to bring shame to her family. The wider community will often view her as a disgrace, leading the mother down a dangerous and isolating path.

The risks of living on the streets with a baby are dire.

The lack of shelter and proper nutrition can lead to malnourishment and illness, which can be life-threatening for both mother and child. Additionally, these young women and their babies are at a higher risk of violence and exploitation, including human trafficking.

For these young mothers, the struggle to provide for their babies is a constant one. They lack access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities, making it challenging to break the cycle of poverty.

Aisha’s Story

Aisha was struggling to care for her baby

when she was only a child herself.

Aisha was only sixteen when she was forced to flee her village after becoming pregnant. Her community shamed her, and she was left with nowhere to turn. With her baby to care for, Aisha resorted to scavenging for food and shelter, relying on the kindness of strangers to survive.

As she saw other children her age going to school and enjoying their families, Aisha felt a deep sense of longing for the love and security they had. Life was difficult and dangerous, and she was constantly worried about the health of her daughter.

One day, a social worker was told about Aisha and

found her feeding her baby behind a broken shack. Arrangements were made to welcome them to Milele where they received formula, diapers, clean clothes

and, a cozy room to sleep in.

Today, Aisha attends school while her baby girl is cared for at our daycare. In the afternoons, they're reunited and enjoy playing with the other babies and moms. Aisha's story is a testament to the life-changing impact of love and support.

A letter from

our founders

My wife, Linda and I have always had a heart for children in need. We were blessed with our own children, and we wanted to give back to our Kenyan community in a meaningful way.

It broke our hearts to see so many innocent lives suffer, and we felt a calling to do something about it. With the generous support of Droplets In A Stream, our Partner organization in Australia, we built a home where mothers and babies can receive the love and care they deserve. It’s heartwarming to see their smiles return after struggling on their own.

Although running a charity can be challenging, it's incredibly rewarding to see the transformation in these young lives. Malnourished infants have grown into healthy, happy toddlers, and teenage mothers have completed their education. We are making a tangible impact here in Kisumu, and hope that you will feel inspired to join us on this journey.
